While many monsters and creatures of myth are striking in appearance, often reflecting a dangerous temperament, the Qilin of Chinese mythology is extremely gentle and benevolent in spite of its fierce appearance. Often dubbed the "Chinese unicorn", the Qilin is a powerful creature with the ability to sense the good and evil in anyone by only looking at them. It was rarely seen by people, but would show itself during times of great peace or when the peace needed to be fought for.
