The Audi Q5 has been a steady seller for the Four Rings, blending ample comfort, smart styling, and impressive tech into a compact premium SUV package. For 2024, the Q5 gets some minor updates, but remains the well-rounded, though somewhat subdued, player in its class.

Stepping Into A Familiar Space
Not much has changed inside the 2024 Q5's cabin. Higher trims get the excellent Virtual Cockpit digital instrument cluster, blending traditional gauges with Google Maps imagery, while a 10.1-inch touchscreen handles infotainment. Materials and build quality are up to Audi's usual high standards.

The Q5's interior is more focused on comfort and spaciousness than wowing with design flair. That makes it an easy place to spend time, with ample room for passengers and cargo. With 18 carry-on cases swallowed with the rear seats folded, utility matches most in this class.

Under The Hood
As before, the Q5 comes standard with a 201-horsepower, 2.0-liter turbo-four that provides decent acceleration for everyday duties. Those seeking more thrust can opt for the 261-hp 45 model, or the 362-hp plug-in hybrid 55. The hybrid is shockingly quick, hitting 60 mph in just 4.5 seconds.

All Q5s come standard with Quattro all-wheel drive. While I appreciated the extra traction on slippery roads, I longed for sharper handling dynamics in general. The steering feels numb and disconnected, with little feedback from the front wheels. Body motions are well controlled but there's precious little fun factor here.

The ride quality is serene, however, soaking up bumps without float or wallow. Road and wind noise are equally hushed, making for a relaxed cruising experience.

Many Tech Treats, But Missing Quirks
Audiophiles will appreciate the available Bang & Olufsen sound system, while the wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto and Wi-Fi hotspot are welcome conveniences. New for 2024 is an Audi App Store for streaming services and remote engine start via the myAudi app.

Safety features like adaptive cruise control and traffic sign recognition are standard too. It all sounds great on paper, yet the Q5 feels just a tad too cold and calculated in person.

Competitors like the Genesis GV70 and Alfa Romeo Stelvio have more personality and driving verve. The Q5 hits all the right marks objectively, but lacks that X-factor making it a truly special product.

The Verdict
With a range of powertrains (including the hot-rod SQ5), multiple body styles, and myriad customization options, the 2024 Audi Q5 remains a smart pick for buyers who want a premium SUV without compromising practicality or comfort. Just don't expect it to set your soul on fire from behind the wheel.

Some quirky styling cues or a more engaging driving experience could elevate the Q5 from good to great. As it stands, Audi's compact crossover is likable and well-rounded, if a bit too sensible for its own good.
