Kirkenes is located in the northernmost tip of Europe and borders Russia. Here Norwegians live side by side with the Russians. But then retired border guard Frode Berg was suddenly arrested in Moscow for espionage.
On December 5, 2017 Frode Berg was arrested in Moscow. Initially, he was given a 14-year prison sentence. Berg was in Moscow's notorious Lefortovo Prison between 2017 and 2019 on suspicion of espionage.
He was found to have transported envelopes containing money from Norway to Moscow in good faith on several occasions. Berg never imagined that he would be used as an intermediary to obtain information about nuclear submarines.
This video is part of an episode of 'In Europe, history caught in the act' with Geert Mak by Stefanie de Brouwer and Roel van Broekhoven. The following people were interviewed: border guard Frode Berg and his wife Anita.
