This week's bZ4x compact-class battery electric crossover shows that Toyota can build a quality EV, yet the company claims that its next generation of BEVs (with Lexus, too) will be much different cars. Toyota is also banking on solid-state batteries that will cost less, weigh less and are projected to be more durable.
The bZ4x (briefly meaning Beyond Zero, based on RAV4, and compact) shares all of its mechanicals with the Subaru Soltera. Roughly four inches longer than the brand's top-selling RAV4, the bZ4x is available with front wheel drive and a single electric motor with 201 horsepower, or with AWD and a dual-electric motor arrangement making 215 horsepower. Pricing starts at $43,350 FWD and $45,430 for AWD. Our top Limited AWD stickered for $52,468 - which is approximately the market average retail price currently paid for all EVs.
The Soltera is AWD only and starts at $46,220.
