Today is a historic day for the aviation world. I’m here in Everett, Washington, and in just a few hours, this 747 - the last one ever built - will officially be delivered to Atlas Air. This has been a moment of celebration; I’m joined by hundreds of current and former Boeing employees, the very people who’ve worked to make the 747 a legend. And they’ve put on one hell of a party to honor the queen.

But there’s also this sense of melancholy in the air. After all, this marks the conclusion to the most successful airplane program in history. And with less and less jumbos gracing the skies every single year, it’s clear the jet’s entered its twilight years. In response, avgeeks worldwide have clamored to book flights on the 747, in an effort to fly it one last time. And all of this has got me thinking - how much time do we have? When will the very last 747 actually be retired, and who will be the one to fly it? Let me explain…
