From our perspective, it's difficult to imagine the world before the discovery of dinosaurs. But the realisation that the first complete specimen was actually an extinct species rocked the scientific world, igniting debate about the creation of the world and the origin of human beings. But the discovery of the first complete specimen of an Ichthyosaur was made in 1811 by a 12-year-old girl from Lyme Regis called Mary Anning. It's the subject of a new book by the author of Girl with a Pearl Earring, Tracy Chevalier, called Remarkable Creatures.
