G'day, today I am at a property that has had kikuyu planted under heavy shade

It will grow but poorly. This is where generally more shade tolerant grasses and ground covers will take over in the future.

There is not a lot you can do to make this grass grow. A different type of grass would have been better, a buffalo of zoysia can handle more shade. In saying that they may still thin out.
