How to fix smoke detector alarm that is beeping or chirping randomly for no apparent reason:
1) Turn the smoke detector counterclockwise and detach it from the base
2) Turn off power supply to the smoke detectors circuit or to the entire house by flipping off the breaker to avoid getting shocked
3) Disconnect the electrical connector from the smoke detector
4) Take out the battery from the smoke detector
5) Press and hold the hush/test button for at least 10 seconds to release the residual energy form the capacitors - you may hear a short beep when doing so
6) The smoke detector should be reset now
7) Reassemble the smoke detector in reverse order: install good working 9v battery, reconnect the electrical connector, attach the smoke detector to its base, restore the power to smoke detectors circuit
8) If problems remains, your smoke detector might be too old, expired or malfunctioning - replace your smoke detector.
