Overhead welding with 7018 gave me fits when I was in welding school.

But once I figured out that I needed to set the amps to almost as hot as I would weld in flat and horizontal, things went smoother....as long as I used a tight arc.

The same goes for 5/32" 7018. And if you have the arc control setting aka "Dig" on some machines, setting it high allows you to drop the amps just a bit to 165and still not stick the rod.
Machines all weld differently so your amperage may vary, but I hope this video gets you going in the right direction.
