In 1942 Hitler launched his great summer offensive against the Soviet oil fields in the Caucasus. If he could seize control of this vital resource, it might prove the decisive moment of the war. But bitter Soviet resistance in the Caucasus Mountains, including shootouts at the summit of Europe's highest mountain peak Mount Elbrus, would thwart Hitler's dream. Soon the tables were turned, and it was the German army that clung on desperately in the notorious 'Kuban Bridgehead'.
