The case of a Tipperary pensioner facing jail time for building a log cabin on his own land has been brought up again in the Dáil, as Minister Darragh O’Brien was urged to pause planning enforcement proceedings on log cabins due to the housing crisis.

Tipperary TD Mattie McGrath described the situation as “baloney” and implored that the Housing Minister sign a statutory amendment immediately to temporarily pause planning enforcement proceedings while the country grapples with the housing crisis.

However, Deputy Mattie McGrath was told by Minister of State Niall Collins, who was speaking on behalf of Minister Darragh O’Brien, that the case of Sean Meehan and others in a similar situation to him were completely out of the minister’s hands and were instead in the hands of the local authority.

Minister Collins explained that Minister O'Brien does not have the authority to enact legislation to overrule an enforcement order.

Deputy McGrath said that a review of planning guidelines is needed in light of the housing crisis.
