The United States is the only developed country where maternal mortality is rising. A recent analysis of delivery hospitalizations and postpartum readmissions in the U.S. found that 23% of in-hospital deaths were related to sepsis. It is the body's life-threatening response to an infection.

In this educational video, Perinatal Clinical Nurse Specialist, Margie Bridges DNP, ARNP, RNC, and Melissa Bauer, DO, a Maternal Sepsis Researcher and Associate Professor at Duke University, discuss the signs and symptoms of maternal sepsis and the challenges of diagnosing and treating sepsis in pregnant women and women who have recently given birth.
