Today I bring you 5 things to keep in mind when test driving the Tesla Model Y.
I am making this series of videos regarding our Model Y Performance experience from an owner's perspective. As always, in this video I try to talk about the things that may make or break your decision to get a Tesla, in this case a Model Y.

We have had our Model Y Performance for a bit over 3 months and about 3300 miles. The Model Y hasn't had any issues. But reflecting on the whole experience, I realize that we might have made some mistakes when we had our test drive.
We overlooked aspects of the Model Y. Things that are very important because when you actually own the car, some of these issues start to surface.
Number 1: test drive the Model Y during broad daylight. This will allow you to actually inspect the craftsmanship of a Tesla vehicle to make sure you are ok with it. Is Tesla a true luxury vehicle? I don't think so. It is a premium experience but comparable cars from other premium brands offer better finishes and detailed craftsmanship. In my experience makes like Lexus, BMW and Audi exhibit better build quality. Our Model Y is plagued with panel gap inconsistencies, misaligned doors, etc. The suspension on our Model Y is very firm and the lack of a liner to cover the sunroof doesn't help with the noise inside the cabin.
Number 2: Test drive the Model Y during the hottest time of the day. If possible, maybe between noon and 3 pm. Remember that one of the issues that I have with this car is the amount of light and or heat that comes through the massive sunroof. It may be a little harder to make an appointment for a day that is both sunny and hot but doing so will allow you the opportunity to experience the sunroof in the worst possible conditions to see if you are ok with it.
Number 3: drive it on as many different types of roads as possible. The Model Y, especially the Performance, because of its lower suspension and bigger wheels, is known to have a bumpy ride. So make sure you not only get on the freeway but also drive it on bad roads which we don't have any shortage of in California.
Number 4: drive a demo vehicle that is similar to the one you plan to order. That will give you a better idea of what the car will feel and look like. The ride quality of the Model Y is affected by the tire package that you pick. Another good option is to test drive different wheel sets to see if you find the 19" more comfortable than the Model Y with 20" or 21" inch wheels.
Number 5: make it a long test drive! Test drive the Model Y for as long as you can.A great option is to rent a used Model Y on Turo. Turo is an app where you can rent cars directly from owners. You can rent a Model Y for around $140 dollars a day. It is not cheap but trust me, it will give more time to get a feel for what the vehicle really is. The link to Turo:

I don't think I have ever test driven a car for longer than an hour and I think that could be a mistake to base your decision to buy a new car on such a brief experience. Especially when it comes to test driving a Model Y, particularly if you have never experienced regenerative braking, the scarcity of physical controls and the huge touchscreen that controls a lot of the car functions. In our case, the unique experience distracted us from paying attention to other aspects of the car that are very important when you own a vehicle long term.

And lastly, like I mentioned in the beginning, this car has been a blast to drive for the first 3 months. No complaints, no buyer's remorse and it still brings a smile to my face when I drive it on weekend getaways. We haven't had any service calls or any issues with it. We have put over 3300 miles in it and have paid less than $200 in charging fees. We are still thinking about getting a home charger, tinting the sunroof and I'll let you know when I do any of this.
