From Sami Yusuf, one of the most influential musicians in the field of traditional music today, comes ‘When Paths Meet’, an electrifying dialogue among remarkable musicians from three continents. Recorded live in Amsterdam as part of the Holland Festival, new compositions and arrangements by the acclaimed British composer are performed with exceptional artistry by Cappella Amsterdam, the Amsterdam Andalusian Orchestra, and Sami Yusuf’s own ensemble. The sold-out event was held in the regal Concertgebouw, a venue that has hosted the greatest musicians of the past two centuries.

New compositions by Sami Yusuf on this album include ‘Veritas’, a piece that opens with distinctly Central Asian tones and ethereal vocalizations that evoke a time before time, before shifting in mood to awe at the fiery majesty of creation. A second new work, ‘Karitas’, expresses the pure love that flows through the heart of all things. It is the very love that is found in abundance in every note and every word of the traditions heard here. His composition ‘ONE’ transitions from Western Europe to the world of Andalusia and North Africa as it engages with sounds of the ney, violin, qanun and percussions, until the dramatic outro seals the ecstatic experience.

Sami Yusuf composed and arranged the music heard here for traditional instruments from lands stretching from China to Spain. The music makes reference at times to Middle Eastern dastgahs, at times to Azerbaijani mughams, at times to Andalusian melodies. And at other times the clear strains of early Western choral music are front and centre. While the music consists of contemporary compositions by Sami Yusuf, most of the lyrics come from mystical writings of luminaries across centuries – from Germany, from Turkey, and from Arabic-speaking lands.
