ABOUT THE LESSON π
The Covid-19 virus has spread around the world. Many of you are reading articles about the pandemic or listening to news reports in English. So I want to teach you some vocabulary that you may come across when you hear information about this global pandemic.

Pandemic Vocabulary Words from the Lesson
Outbreak β a sudden start to a disease
Epidemic β when the outbreak starts to spread beyond its origin
Pandemic β when the epidemic become worldwide
WHO β World Health Organization
CDC β Center for Disease Control
Quarantine (verb) β isolate a person so that a disease does not spread
Self-quarantine β when a person decides to isolate themselves
Symptom (noun) β indication that a person has a disease
Symptomatic (adjective) β describes a person showing symptoms
Asymptomatic (adjective) β not showing symptoms
Spread (verb) β used to say the virus is passing from one person to the next
Epicenter / Hot spot β the place that has the highest level
Contact tracing β if a person has the virus, itβs identifying who they have come in contact with
Flattening the curve β decreasing the amount of cases so that each day there are fewer and fewer
Vaccine β substance used to help the body fight off a disease
Lay (someone) off β to fire or let this person go from their job (unemployed)
Furlough β temporary leave without pay but they will return to their job in the future
Ventilators β machine used to help people breathe
Respirator β mask used to help clean the air
Tip of the iceberg (idiom) β you only see a small amount when there is much more (information) to understand
Hand sanitizer β used to disinfect and clean hands
Respiratory β refers to breathing and the lungs
Amid (preposition) β surrounded by (Amid the pandemicβ¦.)
Bumper-to-bumper traffic β heavy traffic jam
Teem with β a lot of something (The mall is teeming with people.)
