The Nissan Leaf was launched back in 2012 alongside the Mitsubishi i-MiEV as the first two fully electric vehicles sold in Canada. The Mitsubishi didn't last very long, but the Leaf received a full update for the 2017 model year bringing a new design to the basic formula that worked well for Nissan so far. Our 2020 Nissan Leaf SL Plus is the top trim in Canada along with the longest range for this vehicle. It comes with a 160 kW electric motor over the base Leaf's 110 kW motor, and a larger 62 kWh li-ion battery over the 40 kWh. This Leaf Plus also has the ability to use a 100 kW L3 fast charger.

Our full tour and review of this 2020 Nissan Leaf SL Plus goes over all the features and specifications buyers are interested in, including the LED headlights, parking sensors, Around View 360º cameras, how the charging port and connectors work, rear trunk space, and paint options. The Leaf comes with Nissan Safety Shield 360 standard, and ours adds on Nissan ProPILOT Assist along with leather seating, an 8" navigation screen, heated front and rear outboard seats, a heated steering wheel, single-zone automatic climate control, and a 7 speaker Bose audio system.

We discuss how the interior space, legroom, and headroom of the Leaf work out for real world use along with the feel the interior gives us compared to some of the other small EVs we've driven so far. We discuss some of the technical features of this vehicle including the hybrid heater system, the e-Pedal, and brake regen modes, along with the features missing from other EVs around this pricepoint.

We take the 2020 Nissan Leaf SL Plus on a real-world road test to talk about how this compact hatchback's energy economy stacks up against the 2019 Kia Niro EV SX Touring, 2019 Hyundai Kona EV Ultimate, and 2020 BMW i3 REx which we've driven recently. We also discuss the heating and air conditioning issues we had during our week when using the climate control system, and how it might have affected our energy economy testing. We discuss the overall ride, drive, and feel of the Leaf and how it compares to other EVs we've driven, and we wrap up with our overall thoughts on how this vehicle is priced and equipped compared to other vehicles buyers might be considering.
