The Christian life is designed to be lived in community with other believers, not in solitude. We require the support of our fellow Christians if we are to mature spiritually and persevere over the long term. Going to church isn't about getting a gold star for showing there, and it's also not about earning God's favor for the week by gathering with His people. Church is a living body that God wants you to join for your benefit and His glory, not just as a place to go.

It would be far more difficult to avoid going to church if YOU saw it as a relational, healing tool. I have occasionally gone up to church or a Bible study even when I didn't feel like it. On such occasions, God has ministered to the areas of my heart that most needed to hear him.


Because you were raised to feel guilty and ashamed for not being involved with a church, you may be reading this and gritting your teeth. Perhaps you had a religious upbringing and attended church often. I have visited there. Going to church was HARD and quite religious when I was a young adult, but after becoming born-again, I unlearned a lot of things and started being intentional in my relationship with GOD. Now, going to church is my lifeline.
