// WHO can benefit from CORE BOARDS / LOW-TECH or HIGH-TECH AAC:
ALL TODDLERS and CHILDREN IN GENERAL! *see articles below

Build expressive and receptive vocabulary during PLAY using this fun, bright and colorful, pre-made core board!

// Why use a core board: Children might learn BEST with visuals! Also, children who are just beginning to learn language are limited by the words that are CURRENTLY in their vocabulary! So, HOW can we help them EXPAND their language skills and LEARN NEW vocab?! Through visuals and MORE communication opportunities and options!

You can also teach YES / NO with this core board - DETACH yes/no board and make copies to place in each room! Point, model the word and use an exaggerated gesture (head nod and high / low facial affect to represent meaning) and teach understanding

// Core Boards are beneficial for children because they promote FUNCTIONAL COMMUNICATION
Begin with the single core board if your child is beginning to learn language. It they are gestalt language processors OR have a higher receptive vocabulary (what they understand) then use the fringe boards to encourage chunks of language!

// My TOP tips for using CORE / Low tech AAC boards:

What is "Low-Tech AAC" - pictures, tools and strategies that do not involve electronics and do not require batteries which can promote communication opportunities.

Tip 1: Use HIGH FACIAL AFFECT and altering vocal intonation

Tip 2: Say ONE word at a time when the child points to it! (ex: "Like!!" vs "You like it! I like it!")

Tip 3: Give ample access for consistency and exposure to core board! Cut into smaller strips if needed (if you want to start with only a few words! make multiple copies - tape one on every door in your house / in your child's favorite rooms for carryover!)

Tip 4: CREATE communication opportunities by raising objects off the floor and/or placing favorite toys / food in plastic bags so that they might need to ask for assistance to open or gain access or get more pieces! Also provide an empty plate with no food and then use the core board to ask which food your child might want! Give them an opportunity to communicate what they want to request and/or communicate and then honor that communication!

**Remember to HONOR your child's communication even if they use a visual that "doesn't make sense" to you or if you know they don't like it - give your child a tomato if they point to a tomato - instead of re-prompting for a more "preferred" response. This encourages independence and gives greater meaning to each visual

Tip 5: Use the board with your child's favorite items / actions like "open" or to request more pieces!

AAC Boards help promote communicative intent through the understanding and correlation between symbols and the word!
