French President Emmanuel Macron rejected claims French border police 'let the migrant tragedy happen' on Thursday.

He also laid blame on the UK which he described as 'El Dorado' for migrants which represents a country of fabulous wealth and opportunity.

Referring to footage of migrants launching dingies off the French coast on Wednesday night a reporter asked Macron: "In front of Police officers who didn't intervene, how do you stop another drama like the one that happened last night?"

President Macron responded: "Our law and order forces are mobilised day and night. Not yesterday or the day before, right from the beginning they've been at the borders.

And France has never had so many police officers, Gendarme and the military who are mobilised against illegal immigration."

Going even further to negate responsibility, he said the European cooperation was needed after 27 migrants died a day earlier when their dinghy deflated as they made a perilous crossing of the English Channel.

"We need stronger European cooperation in this area. France is a transit country," Macron said during a news conference in Zagreb.

Britain slammed France on Thursday after 27 people died trying to cross the Channel in an inflatable dinghy, the worst accident of its kind on record in the waterway separating the two countries.
