Curator of The Nature of Arp, Catherine Craft discusses how fragments factor into the work of Jean (Hans) Arp as exemplified in the work of Daphne, 1955. After World War II, Arp would create new sculptures by splitting apart casts of existing works as is with Daphne, 1955 which resulted from making a vertical cut through a plaster cast of Ptolemy, 1953. Arp credits fragments as a role in his creative process: "A small fragment of one of my plastic [i.e. sculptural] works presenting a curve or a contrast that moves me, is often the germ of a new work."
