We all know that the Tesla Model S Plaid is a straight line monster that runs low 6s in the 1/8th and low 9s in the 1/4. We've seen it set records at famous professional circuits such as Laguna Seca and the Nürburgring. But how well can an almost 2.5 ton (5,000 lb) car handle the super tight twisties of an autocross circuit?!

I registered for Events #7 and #8, the last two AutoX events of the 2021 season, here in the North Carolina Region. In AutoX, cars rarely leave 2nd gear, so speeds are typically between 20mph and 50mph. Mazda Miatas, AWD Subarus, and the like, are typically the cars that rule the AutoX circuit. Can a 4-door, 5,000b sedan hang with the smaller, extremely nimble cars?

My guess up front was that the quick acceleration, combined with the AWD of the Plaid would definitely help. While, they did help, the acceleration was almost too much and I had to drop from Plaid mode into Sport mode, just so that I didnt over-accelerate. The AWD was definitely helpful, but the sheer weight of the car meant much more momentum going into turns or during hard braking. In longer, sweeping turns, the weight of the car, combined with the speed, had a tendency to allow the car to plow away from ideal lines.

End result: The Plaid handled the course very well. My amateur AutoX driving skills, well, they didnt really help. Once I started to get a feel for the limits of the car on the particular course, I could drive closer to the edge of losing grip and deviating from the ideal line, and maintain a little more speed, attack corners more precisely, and start shaving fractions of seconds off my time. Ill be back next year (work schedule permitting) for all of the events that NCR-SCCA is hosting.
