The German chancellor Angela Merkel has expressed shock at what she called “surreal destruction” caused by flash flooding on a visit to one of the worst hit towns, Schuld in the west of Germany.

At least 184 people have died in Germany and Belgium. There's been more heavy rain across the region, especially in southern Germany and Austria.
