Public sector unions affiliated to Cosatu and Saftu have rejected the 4,7% wage increase announced by the Minister of Public Service and Administration Noxolo Kiviet. The wage hike that is expected to kick in on the 1st of April forms part of the two-year public sector wage agreement signed in 2023 - guaranteeing an inflation-linked increase in 2024/25.
At the time of signing, Saftu unions including some from Cosatu refused to sign the deal, accusing government of undermining collective bargaining and unilaterally forcing a below inflation increment on them.
The unions, including police union Popcru, now say they will consult their members ahead of a fresh round of talks for the coming year, threatening to once again mobilise and march against the government.
