The roots of the Lockheed AH-56 Cheyenne go back the 1950s and experiments with a rigid rotor hub helicopter but the results were so good that the US Army commissioned a project to study its potential uses which eventually lead to the AH-56.
To many, this was the best attack helicopter of the 20th century but to the USAF and its competitors, it was a threat that was just too much to bear so in the end and under combined pressure the project was cancelled. This is the story of the best helicopter that never was.
