The Mercedes-Benz 500E is one of those cars that was built against the odds and worked. It worked so well, in fact, that there is a strong argument that it remains the best sedan ever built. Of course, given its price tag of $88K in 1992 ($190K today), I guess it better damn well have worked.
It was a collaboration between two German powerhouses - Mercedes-Benz and Porsche. Mercedes was at the top of its game, but coming under an existential threat from upstart Lexus, while Porsche was in the midst of a crisis that had it heading toward bankruptcy if things didn't change for them.
These two companies in very different places (metaphorically - locationwise, they were almost next door to each other) would come together to build a car that was an instant classic when built, and remains relevant today.
