Dust collection is something that I am sorely lacking in my workshop, and that means that the air quality is less than ideal. Safety is a huge concern for me and I try and do anything and everything that I can to protect myself while in the workshop. Part of that safety is wearing a full respirator when doing anything that sends particulates flying into the air i.e. sanding, spray painting. Recently it has been almost unbearably hot in my workshop, which makes wearing a full respirator extremely uncomfortable and I find myself not wanting to wear it while I work. With this downdraft table I can work comfortably in my shop without sacrificing my safety.

I originally planned to build a traditional downdraft table with an mdf or plywood box acting as the base, when inspiration struck while I was in the storage area of Target. Why don't I just use a storage bin as the base? They are sturdy, lightweight, and the bin section is already airtight. The more I thought about it the more sense it made. I was determined to find out if it was possible!

After ordering the correct dust port to fit my shop vac hose, I got to work. Everything except the dust port were things I already had laying around ( I happened to run out of E6000 right before this project, hence the new tube still in the packaging)

I want to mention that I didn't dive into specific measurements in this video because there are so many sizes, shapes, and options out there, that chances are you won't end up with the exact same parts as me. This video is meant to be a working proof of concept and to show that you can indeed make a working downdraft table using a storage bin.
