Sharks!!!! Sharks are some of the coolest creatures that can be found on our wonderful blue
planet. These fish have been around a long time as well, dating back to the days of the
dinosaurs with the likes of the ever popular Megalodon being the biggest shark of all. These
knife finned fishies have patrolled the oceans, looking for the next meals and generally looking
sleek and stylish...Except for the Goblin Shark. That one is pretty ugly. Though they do come in
all shapes and sizes, from the tiny salmon shark to the ginormous Great White. We as humans
have always had a morbid interest in these monsters of the deep, ranging from genuine
scientific curiosity in how they live and feed, to more gruesome interests like seeing them rip
apart a seal or some unfortunate fish. Honestly, we do like to portray them as the latter,
especially when it comes to the big screen.
Since Jaws debuted on screens, weve had countless attempts to make a shark movie that could
even brush against the impact it had. The fear, the intrigue, and the paralyzing fear of water all
came from the amazing 1975 movie directed by Steven Speilberg, and really hasn’t been felt
since. That being said though, there are a lot of good shark movies out there….And some
terrible ones. But today were going to focus on the best of the best...In this 26 year old man
child opinion. With that said, here are the 5 best shark films ever!
With all that said and done, lets begin, shall we?
#5: Open water.
Open Water graces our number 5 spot for being a nerve wracking and excellent survival horror
film about a married couple stranded in the ocean blue, with only themselves and the water to
keep them company...And a large group of very very hungry sharks. Open Water is a film that
debuted in 2003 at the Sundance Film festival, with Lions Gate Films distributing it.
This movie isn’t like your typical shark films where the action is generally faster paced and
bloody. This is a slow burn film, with the sharks not actually having as big a presence until
certain moments. What makes this film stand out however is the suspense you feel. You know
the sharks are there, and you know this poor stranded couple has no way of getting away or
defending themselves. There no explosions, theres no guns or blade...Its just a time grind until
the sharks decide to strike. Its nerve wracking and it makes every time a shark attacks all the
more terrifying as you see the couples hope for rescue dwindle with every second that passes,
and accumulate more injuries and leaking more blood, with all that culminating in even more
sharks surrounding them..
What makes this even better is that this is based on a true story...Back when that phrase
actually meant something. This movie is based on the disappearance of Tom and Eileen
Lonergan. Similar to the movie, Tom and Eileen went on a diving trip in Australia. They were not
present for the head count to return to shore, and no one seemed to notice, resulting in them
being left behind by accident. It took two days for their disappearances to be noticed, and

search parties were sent out to look for them, but sadly it only resulted in the discovery of some
personal items. The couple was never found and are presumed dead, with the diving company
being heavily fined for their negligence.
#4: The Meg.

Who doesn’t love the Megaladon??? I know you guys do! You love him so much that you
always argue in the comments when I dont mention him in anything shark related...So here you
go. Be happy.
The Meg is a 2018 Sci-fi Action film starring Jason Statham as a deep sea rescue diver, who
along with a cast of marine biologists and ocean experts encounter a literal fossil that had been
trapped under the floor of the Marianas Trench. Through the humans own mistakes, the giant
hungry shark is able to break out of its home, and develops a taste for the new crunchy
humans, and its up to Jason to stop it!
This movie is dumb stupid fun, I’m not going to lie. They try to put a lot of science behind it but
at the end of the day, this falls on the line of just wanting to see a giant shark rampage and eat
people.
The meg is actually based on the 1997 novel, Meg: A novel of Deep Terror, written by Steven
Alten. The Meg film itself is again, fun, not trying to be over dramatic or too serious and finding
just the right blend of comedy and action, with a good amount of twists in the way. Spoiler alert
coming up for a three year old movie!!!
