(16 Oct 1978) Full Story: w010159: 7842A RHODESIA: THE BLOODY PATH TO ZIMBABWE, 1978
Shows: Rhodesian leader Smith
leaving on a visit to the USA and speaking in US with
Sithole.
Negotiations have been going on most of the year to
bring about an all-party conference on Rhodesia,
with Salisbury's new multi-racial leadership sitting
down with the guerrilla leaders of the Patriotic Front.
Britain and the United States have been involved in
talks with all these parties, and also with the front-line
African states. Rhodesia's white leader Ian Smith has finally
said he will attend all-party talks, which could decide dates
for elections and independence with Britain taking up a
supervisory role during that period in its breakaway colony.
An all-party conference looks to be the very last chance for
a peaceful settlement.
