The coupe-inspired Audi Q3 Sportback aims to bring some extra style to the compact premium crossover segment. With a sloped roofline and sharper creases along the sides, it certainly looks sportier than the frumpy BMW X2 and more conventional Q3 on which it's based. But as is often the case with this type of vehicle, form takes precedence over function.

Jumping inside, you're greeted by the same well-built but uninspiring cabin as the regular Q3. Everything is laid out ergonomically and the materials are high-quality where you interact with them most, but the overall design is a bit too drab for our tastes compared to trendier alternatives. At least Audi's tech offerings are superb, highlighted by the slick 10.1-inch touchscreen infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Where the Q3 Sportback's fashion-over-function priorities become most evident is with interior packaging. Sure, front passengers have ample head- and legroom. But that rakish roofline significantly compromises rear headroom to the point that taller occupants will feel cramped. The sloping rear hatch also impedes visibility and cuts into cargo capacity slightly compared to the squared-off Q3, though the Sportback still leads the segment with up to 675 liters of space.

On the move, the Q3 Sportback drives pretty much like the regular Q3 – unsurprising given they share the same underpinnings and powertrain options. The ride is comfortable and well-damped, though models with the larger wheels can get a bit jarring over rougher roads. Handling is sound if unremarkable, with moderate body lean and steering that's accurate if a bit numb on center. Overall, the experience is refined but lacks engagement.

Under the hood, buyers have a few solid turbocharged engine choices. The 184-horsepower 2.0T is punchy enough for daily driving, while the 228-hp version provides extra thrust. If fuel economy is a priority, the 45 TDI diesel is capable of over 40 mpg on the highway. For maximum efficiency, the plug-in hybrid 45 TFSI e gets an electric-only range of 31 miles, though battery pack eats into cargo room.

Pricing for the 2023 Audi Q3 Sportback starts at $36,400 for a base 40 TFSI, which comes well-equipped with LED lighting, dual-zone climate control, and Audi's slick Virtual Cockpit digital instrument cluster. Load one up, however, and the sticker can approach $50,000 – serious money for a compact crossover.

At the end of the day, the Q3 Sportback is a curious creation that brings style to the crossover party but compromises substance in the process. If you want a modish crossover that turns heads, the Sportback serves up ample curb appeal. But if you need maximum utility and flexibility, you're better off sticking with the standard Audi Q3 or looking at boxier alternatives like the Volvo XC40.
