The Enercon E-66 wind turbine went into operation on June 8, 1999 on top of Fröttmaninger Berg (former landfill site). The peak output of the plant, which is just under 100 meters high in total, is 1.5 MW and it produces around 1800 MWh of electrical energy per year.

Despite location-specific support, there is still a clear North-South divide in terms of capacity density. Berlin, Bavaria, Baden-Württemberg and Saxony make the smallest contribution to the total capacity with less than 100 kW/km2 - these states have a share of 35% of the federal territory but provide only 10% of the total installed wind energy capacity.
