The Psychology Today Magazine says the happiest people are curious, adventurous, explorers. For me, visiting Creede’s Underground Mining Museum in Colorado satisfied all of these requirements.

This place is so very unique. As you can see, this underground museum has been built into the side of a mountain. Because of that, it stays at a consistent cool temperature…making it a great place to visit on either really hot days or rainy days.

They’re open year-round, but winter hours are limited.

I did the self-guided audio tour, which cost $9. They give you an MP3 player with a headset and it lasts about 30 minutes.

They also offer guided tours for $16. These last a full hour, but reservations are required.

The older I get, the more I love history. So, I really loved this experience which allowed me to take a step back in time!

Over 45,000 people have visited the museum since guided tours began in 1992.

Blasted out of a solid rock cliff by three Creede miners, construction of the museum began in 1990. They created a 600 foot horizontal passageway with 22 displays and a really great gift shop.

So, let me give you some brief history about the town itself…

From 1889 to 1893 the town of Creede bustled with mining fever. By 1892, Creede’s mines produced $1,000,000 worth of ore every month. In these few years, Creede gave birth to an independent, rambunctious culture. It was a strange mixture of bunco artists, saloon keepers, pickpockets, dance hall girls, professional gamblers - and even some church going families.

By 1893 the boom went bust. Passage of the Silver Act in 1893 caused silver prices to tumble from $1.29 per ounce to just $0.50 per ounce. Gradually, with a few more minor boom and bust cycles, Creede’s population declined to its present size.

The residents of Creede are proud of their legacy. Today, a heritage of creativity and ingenuity blend with modern vitality to bring theater, museums and diverse recreational opportunities to visitors. This unique combination of human and geologic history makes Creede an exciting place to visit.
