In this Channel 17 Reports Special, Producer/Reporter Fran Lucca follows up on the Love Canal tragedy. Two years after President Carter declared a federal disaster at the Love Canal due to the surfacing of more than 80 types of chemicals, many of them deadly, buried by the Hooker and Plastics Corporation 40 years earlier. While 237 families closest to the canal were forced to abandon their homes, more than 500 families remain. They continue to struggle with health issues. Testing shows chromosomal abnormalities in some residents, and many are frustrated with local, state, and federal government response. The residents have mixed feelings about moving again to temporary housing.
