I have been waiting two years for the all new Sony WF-1000XM4 earbuds, and they are FINALLY HERE! In this video, we put them to the test and I break down the pros and cons of these new Sony flagship earbuds.
TIMESTAMPS:
0:00 The Earbuds
1:10 Physical Design
4:00 Water Resistance and Bluetooth Connectivity
4:53 Sound Quality
6:00 Microphone test (indoor & outdoor)
6:31 App and Features
9:14 Compatibility
9:50 Active Noise Cancellation
10:50 Some Cons
ADDITIONAL REVIEW NOTES:
PHYSICAL DESIGN
MUCH smaller and more aesthetic than the XM3’s
3 foam ear tips:
Pretty secure and light feeling
Great seal isolates and ensures optimal listening experience
Can get a bit stuffy and hot in ears
Battery life: 8/24 hrs (with ANC on!)
Wireless charging or USB-C charging
Sony’s V1 chip is very efficient and can handle high res audio & ANC without decimating the battery life
**IPX4 water resistant!
Bluetooth 5.2
Recycled packaging is a big bonus!
CONTROLS
Touchpads are customizable
Touch and hold to temporarily hear surroundings
Touch and hold other bud for assistant
MICROPHONE TEST
SOUND
Superb sound quality with LDAC and clean, detailed audio
DSEE Extreme (doesn’t really excite me)
Excellent EQ presets and customization options
I lifted my highs slightly so I could hear those high end details
FEATURES and APP
Speak to chat (silence music and turn on transparency)
Adaptive Sound Control
Music Controls in app
Auto play/pause (in ear detection)
Custom Bluetooth Connection Quality
360 Reality Audio
Google or Alexa voice assistant
Customizable touch controls (sort of - they come in sets)
Earbud fit test
Pass through / transparency mode is decent!
COMPATIBILITY
Android, iPhone, Windows, Mac, or just about anything else (as regular buds)
Mobile is best for the app
Android pairs super easily (like airpods on iPhone)
ANC
AMC does a great job and doesn't struggle with external sounds such as cymbals or door slams
CONS:
Mic quality (but not bad, just not the #1)
If you are getting a phone call and do not already have the buds in, you can’t really insert foam tips quickly. Also, they give a 5 second spiel about battery levels
Master/Slave connection (no mono mode)
Only able to connect to one divice at a time
Price = $280
Ears can fatigue after a few hours of listening
CONCLUSION:
These are fantastic for commuters, desk jobs, casual listeners, travelers, and honestly anyone else besides those seeking to use earbuds primarily for workouts, and even then these are not bad
