The Silver Age of comics, and Marvel specifically, added concepts like pain and cost to the life of superheroes. In the Golden Age, while suffering and loss were still part of some origin stories, the heroes themselves tended to be larger than life. Their weaknesses were generally specific if sometimes arbitrary. Just how much Kryptonite can there be? Silver Age and Marvel comics embraced the idea of the powers having a cost to the bearer, that power was more of a burdon and a responsibility than it was a gift.

While there’ve been some weaknesses that’ve been some real doozies in the Golden Age, like Green Lantern and the color yellow or Wonder Woman being tied up by men, the restrictions on powers in the Marvel universe generally had more to do with the characters’ struggles. The mutants like Cyclops, Nightcrawler, Cable and Multiple Man were hated by everyone or characters like Bruce Banner were haunted by the beast within like the Hulk. Ghost Rider was literally cursed with his own power. Even god-like figures such as Thor had earthly limits. Characters who got their powers through accidents, like Cloak & Dagger, generally had to pay a high cost just to maintain, much less use, their powers. Even if ones powers came from magic, like Nico from the Runaways, magic had its own demands from the user. Either way, being a superhero has its cost. Here are some crazy power restrictions of Marvel Superheroes.
