Toyota's solid-state battery breakthrough could reshape the EV narrative, drawing electric vehicles on level with traditional ones.

General Motors rolled out the EV1 in 1996 as the first mass-produced electric vehicle to hit the market. Initially equipped with lead-acid batteries, it could only muster a meager range of about 70 to 90 miles. For GM, it wasn't the roaring success it had envisioned. And by 2003, the company collected all but 40 EV1s and simply crushed them. While this little story ends on a somber note, it underscores a crucial point: an electric vehicle can be laden with world-class features for the time, but if its range falls short, it might fail to convince discerning buyers. Even GM spokesperson Dave Barthmuss admitted that the lack of consumer interest was because of the low range and the relatively high price.

Fast-forward to a little over a decade later, Tesla entered the EV scene with its Roadster, offering an impressive 245 miles on a single charge. Since then, the EV industry has been on an upward trajectory, with numerous EVs now offering ranges exceeding 300 miles. Yet, amidst this progress, the Lucid Air stands tall with its remarkable 516-mile range (recognized as the epitome of EV ranges). But this narrative is about to change for good. The spotlight now shifts to Toyota because of its recently announced breakthrough in solid-state battery technology that promises an unbelievable range of 745 miles. If true, Toyota's revolutionary solid-state battery breakthrough could redefine how we view electric mobility and be a true game-changer for the automotive industry. So, are we in for exciting times ahead? You bet we are.
