This is a video by Alan Watts about our relationship with nature and the universe. Watts argues that the way we think about ourselves is fundamentally flawed and this misconception is the root cause of our environmental problems.

The video opens with Watts describing the beauty of nature and how different it is from the world we have built. He observes that nature is wiggly and curvy, whereas human creations are linear and square. This, according to Watts, reflects a basic misunderstanding. Humans think the world works because they can simplify it into concepts and formulas. However, الطبيعة (tabiعة, nature) is far more complex than our understanding of it.

Watts then expands on this idea, arguing that our sense of self, or ego, is an illusion. We think of ourselves as separate entities from the universe, but this is not the case. We are part of a vast, interconnected web of existence. Our bodies function automatically, without our conscious effort, and everything we are is ultimately connected to everything else.

The problem, according to Watts, is that we confuse this illusion of ego with reality. We think we are in control, and we try to manipulate the world around us. This meddling, he argues, is the cause of our ecological problems. We are trying to impose our simple human understanding on a complex system that we don’t fully grasp.

Watts concludes the video with the idea that the solution is not to try to do more, but to simply let go. We need to recognize that our ego is an illusion and that we are part of something much larger than ourselves. When we come to this realization, we can stop trying to control the world and instead, allow nature to take its course.
