Space continues to expand, and the further away it is, the faster it expands away from us. We don’t know what makes it expand, or why it appears to be speeding up, but we can measure a distant object’s speed by how much its light is stretched out. As the light frequencies get longer they shift in color down the spectrum becoming redder and redder. How much they are red-shifted tells us the speed at which they are receding.
Distant objects which we can see with ordinary light are very, very red and travelling fast but still below the speed of light. Beyond that, the galaxies are travelling away so fast that their light has been shifted into the infrared part of the spectrum. This is one of the reasons astronomers were looking forward to the Oct 31st, 2021 launch of the James Webb Space Telescope, or JWST, which is designed to see well into the infrared part of the spectrum. Now the date has been pushed forward to December 18th, 2021, and we are all looking forward to an early Christmas/holiday present of a successful launch!
