Supercar performance with grand touring style

Few cars have a history as long or as storied as the Mercedes SL There's been an SL of some sort since the 1950s, the lineage starting with the 300SL Gullwing, and ever since, there's been a new model along every 10 to 12 years or so.

This is the all-new SL, the latest in the line, specifically the SL 55 version. As well as striking styling, it comes complete with a 375bhp, 4.0-litre V8 bi-turbo petrol engine, a nine-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox, and – for the first time in the SL – four-wheel drive and four-wheel steering, as well as pretty lavish amounts of equipment.

Its ambition is to be more sporting than previous SLs, and to have a proper go at taking on the Porsche 911. In order to achieve that, it's built on an all-new aluminium platform, it has a lighter fabric roof instead of folding metal roof, and it's been developed by AMG at Affalterbach. It'll do 0-62mph in 3.9sec, a top speed of 183mph, and it costs just under £150,000. That being the case, buyers probably won't care that it only does 21.4mpg.
