Media outlets are storming the internet saying that M1 Machines are intentionally being targeted by Apple to reduce the lifespan of the product.

I give my thoughts on the situation after reading some articles and going through the Twitter feed itself. This does seem to be a problem with memory swapping, however, it's inconclusive what the root cause is. Is it because of the M1 chip? Is it because of Big Sur? Is it a memory leaks? There are a lot of variables at play here, and with early stages of development happening its hard to pinpoint the cause.

It does seem from my judgment that M1 does a significant amount of memory swapping and with machines only at 16GB max, comparing 32GB of RAM on an Intel machine would be apples to oranges.

Should you be concerned? For the majority of people, probably not. If you conduct the same test and find that within 2-3 months that you are at 1-2%, you're okay. If you're sitting a 3% plus, then you could start to worry about what could happen within the next 5 years. We will have to wait to see what Apple says or if they even decide to address this but clearly, a bug is lurking around macOS.
