The Big Bear Solar Observatory (BBSO) was built by the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) in 1969. In 1997 the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) took over the operation of the telescope. The observatory’s primary focus is the physics of the sun. Situated on Big Bear Lake in Southern California, it’s location is ideal for viewing the sun in all it’s glory. The cool waters and clear sky allow for optimal viewing conditions.
