পবিত্র কুরআনে আল্লাহ তাআলা বলেন, হে নবী ‘আমার বান্দাদের জানিয়ে দাও যে— নিশ্চয়ই আমি অত্যন্ত ক্ষমাশীল ও অপরিসীম দয়ালু।’ (সুরা হিজর, আয়াত : ৪৯)

অপর আয়াতে মহান আল্লাহ বলেন, ‘তোমরা ক্ষমা প্রার্থনা করো আল্লাহর কাছে। আল্লাহ ক্ষমাশীল, পরম দয়ালু।’ (সুরা মুজ্জাম্মিল, আয়াত : ২০)

ইস্তেগফারের দোয়াটি হচ্ছে:
সেটি হচ্ছে:
رَبِّ اِنِّیۡ ظَلَمۡتُ نَفۡسِیۡ فَاغۡفِرۡ لِیۡ
উচ্চারণ : ‘রাব্বি ইন্নি জালামতু নাফসি ফাগফিরলি’
অর্থ : ‘হে আমার প্রভু! নিশ্চয়ই আমি নিজের উপর জুলুম করেছি, অতএব আপনি আমাকে ক্ষমা করে দিন।’ (সুরা কাসাস : আয়াত ১৬)
