Every production car made by Tesla from 2008 to early 2021 had a physical drive selector of some sort.

Roadsters up to VIN 500 had a metal shift lever in the center console, a remnant of Tesla's original (failed) decision to put a 2-speed transmission in its first model. VIN 501 and onward received a pushbutton console.

The 2012 Model S received a column shifter which would set the standard for drive mode selection in every subsequent model.

Now there's the refreshed 2021 Model S with none of the above. It'll attempt to figure out which direction you want to go. If you'd rather decide for yourself, the controls aren't anything like what they were previously. See how it works in this video and how it evolved(?) from cars before it.
