The Hyundai Kona Hybrid is one of a number of Hyundai models that combine excellent economy with great kerb appeal styling. The Hyundai Kona Hybrid is not a plug-in hybrid model, its a full hybrid which means it uses regenerative braking and power from the engine to charge its small battery. Recently updated with some new tech, the Kona Hybrid also has an all electric sibling, the excellent Kona Electric.
If your not quite ready for a full electric car, then this ‘full hybrid’ version is probably the best option for low running costs. The Kona Hybrid uses a 1.6-litre petrol engine with a 43bhp electric motor for a combined 139bhp. There’s a small 1.56kWh battery, and while the Kona Hybrid can run on electric power alone for short periods, it’s mainly used to make driving around town and in traffic more efficient. The computer automatically turns the engine on and off to achieve this, and does so seamlessly. The automatic gearbox means it’s really easy and relaxing to drive.
There's some updated alloy wheel designs to choose from, re-styled tail lights feature horizontally-stretched graphics, plus there's a much smarter bumper. As before, short rear overhangs and a low roofline add to its good looks, as well as contrasting exterior accents and roof bars, which inject a bit of that all-important SUV flavour.
All models in the Kona range are equipped with a range of enhanced safety and driving assist features for added peace of mind. For example, Leading Vehicle Departure Alert (LVDA) alerts the driver if they do not react fast enough when the vehicle ahead of them starts moving. Another is Lane Following Assist (LFA), which automatically adjusts steering to assist the driver to keep in the centre of the lane. Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist with pedestrian detection (FCA) is now standard. Rear Seat Alert (RSA) alerts the driver if someone or something is in the back seat when they go to exit the vehicle. In addition, all Kona models are now available with eCall, a feature which automatically alerts emergency services if the airbags are deployed or the e-Call button is pushed.
So, If you're after a small Compact SUV Crossover that's city-orientated and you're not quite ready to take the dive into full-EV motoring, then this Kona Hybrid might prove to be a very good choice, given its also a great value proposition too.
