October is Global Diversity Awareness Month, which provides an opportunity for us at the UCSF School of Medicine to pause and celebrate our recent achievements in diversity, equity, and inclusion; share plans for continued efforts toward becoming the most diverse, equitable, and inclusive academic medical institution in the nation; and share resources for your own DEI journey.

As we look toward the future, we are excited to launch the second phase of our Differences Matter initiative. We have worked closely with Vice Chancellor Renee Navarro to craft a new phase of Differences Matter that amplifies and augments the work that her office is leading campus-wide to support Anti-Racism. In the next month, we will share more information and begin recruiting for positions to lead this work.

Diversity, equity, and inclusion are critical to our continued success as a public institution. Working together, we can dismantle the structural inequities that exist in our environment and create a climate where every member of our campus can thrive.

Tackling diversity, equity, and inclusion takes a multi-pronged effort, sustained over time. There is no magic bullet. We must be persistent, patient, and committed to making change.

Thank you to all of you who care so deeply about these issues and for the work you do every day.
