All subwoofers need an amp, whether it's built into the enclosure of a powered sub or mounted separately from the enclosure. The installation for either type is roughly the same; you need to grab power from your car's battery and then connect signal either from an aftermarket receiver's preamp outputs or by tapping into factory wiring.
