The Bunion Derby of 1928 was a Los Angeles to New York City foot race organized by Charles C. Pyle, It began on March 3, 1928 in Los Angeles and finish near the end of May in New York City. The prize money offered was $48,500 with $25,000 going to the man who finished fastest in total time. The race loosely followed the path of Route 66 “The Motherhood”, at least from LA to Chicago the two terminal cities. This footage shows the run going through Tulsa, Oklahoma with runners heading south on Cincinnati Avenue toward Lee School (now Lincoln) where they would dine rest for the night. After almost 3 months of running, Oklahoma farm boy Andy Payne got to NYC the fastest to win $25,000, which was used to pay off the farm back in Oklahoma.
