Louise Nevelson Inspired Assemblage

Introduction to Louise Nevelson, an American Sculptor and her work through videos and slides.
Class discussed how contemporary materials can be used in art and how modern artists can transform everyday objects to make them interesting and beautiful to look at. Students thought of all the different materials and ideas that can be used in an assemblage artwork.

Key Objectives:
- To learn the difference between assemblage and collage.
- Experiment with different resources.
- Collaborate and share materials and tools.
- Gain concentration skills.
- Practice skills such as gluing, sticking, cutting and tearing
- Use tools such as scissors and staplers properly.
- Brainstorming, Organizing, Planning and Practicing.

Vocabulary:
Found objects – objects that originally had a different purpose, which the artist collected and used in his/her artwork
Assemblage – form of sculpture made of “found” objects arranged in such a way that they create a piece; these objects can be anything organic or man-made
Monochromatic – having only one color
Form – a 3 dimensional figure
Shape- 2 dimensional or flat with defined edges
Composition - combining elements in a pleasing arrangement

Instructions for E - H:

Students were given cardboard cutouts of different sizes.

They were asked to cut and make sides for the cardboard and create a box.

They were instructed to further divide the box into smaller compartments to place their objects in.

Students then chose their objects carefully from the “junk buffet” and arranged them aesthetically inside the box.

If required they were allowed to cut pieces to fit. 

Once satisfied with the composition they glued the pieces in place using white glue or hot glue gun.

We waited for the entire composition to dry out until the next day.

Sculptors then chose “Monochromatic” spray paint in black, white or golden color to cover their artworks.
