Neither the United States nor China had high hopes from US Secretary of State Antony Blinken’s visit to Shanghai and Beijing but the idea was to build on the so-called momentum generated after the two presidents met late last year in the US.

The visit came close on the heels of America clearing a multi-billion-dollar foreign package, which includes aid for Taiwan and also for the US partners in the Indo-Pacific. China doesn’t seem to have taken too kindly to that.

Blinken met several top-ranking officials, including his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi and President Xi Jinping. And it each of the meetings, he harped on about managing bilateral differences responsibly.

Xi, borrowing from Chinese proverbs, had some blunt messaging for the US and Wang Yi did some plain talking.
