Have you ever wondered if there is a cure for procrastination? There is, actually. In fact, most of us are already using it; although in many cases we are using it unconsciously or incorrectly. This mystery cure is a commitment device or a choice we make in the present to control our behavior in the future. Commitment devices lock our future selves into following through on a behavior our past selves implement.

The problem arises with time inconsistency. This occurs when our brains value long-term benefits, but only when they are in the future. In the present, we instead gravitate toward instant gratification. Battling time inconsistency requires us to set up the commitment device so that it must be placed in motion by a force outside ourselves. This force must be powerful enough to make so that not following through with what we want to accomplish is more painful than actually following through.
