Pentagon officials said Ukraine had pulled out Abrams M1A1 battle tanks from the frontline due to the threat posed by Russian drones. The Russian drone warfare, as per US officials, made it too difficult for Ukraine to operate the Abrams without detection or coming under attack.
The US had provided Kyiv with 31 Abrams in January 2023 after an aggressive months-long campaign by President Volodymyr Zelensky. The Ukrainian leader had then argued that the tanks, which cost about $10 million apiece, were vital to its ability to breach Russian lines.
